Award Types:
Recognition Award
The Recognition Award shines a spotlight on all the companies in Northwest Indiana that pay special attention to safety conditions and OSHA rates. Calculated based on The Company’s OSHA Days Away from Work (DAFW) Rate, Days Away Restricted and Transferred Rate (DART), and Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), must be below the most current national industry average rates for the company’s NAICS code as established by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.The current rates can be found here:
OSHA Rate Info- Complete main application which includes uploading a copy of OSHA 300-A for 2017, 18 & 19
- Must be free of any work-related fatality or Willful/Egregious OSHA citations in 2019
- Subscriber’s dues must be paid for 2019 & 2020
Achievement Award
Your company must first meet the criteria for Recognition Level. The company’s DAFW, DART and TRIR must be below the averages of the submitted applications for the company’s NAICS code group. The company must demonstrate its safety management system by addressing the questions in main application.
- Complete main application which includes uploading a copy of OSHA 300-A for 2017, 18 & 19
- Must be free of any work-related fatality or Willful/Egregious OSHA citations in 2019
- Subscriber’s dues must be paid for 2019 & 2020
Excellence Award
In order to qualify for the Excellence award, your company must first meet the criteria for Achievement Level and your company’s DAFW, DART and TRIR must be below the averages for our NWI Regional Contractor Community for the company’s NAICS code for the last three years. Any company eligible to receive the Excellence Award is subject to a random job site audit. This audit may be conducted by an outside source selected by the NWIBRT committee.

- Must be free of any work-related fatality or Willful/Egregious OSHA citations in 2019
- Subscriber’s dues must be paid for 2019 & 2020
Company of the Year
Each company who meets the Excellence Award criteria will be considered for this award. One Company of the Year award will be presented. All eligible companies for Company of the Year Award will be subjected to The winner will be selected by the NWIBRT Member Companies based on application evaluation, overall contributions to the safety culture in Northwest Indiana and open discussion among the Member Companies.
- Your organization will automatically be entered for the Company of The Year Award when you complete the main Construction Awards Banquet application.
Contractor of the Year
Each contractor who meets the Excellence Award criteria will be considered for this award. One Contractor of the Year award will be presented. The winner will be selected by the NWIBRT Member Companies based on application evaluation, overall contributions to the safety culture in Northwest Indiana and open discussion among the Member Companies.
- Your organization will automatically be entered for the Contractor of The Year Award when you complete the main Construction Awards Banquet application.
Innovation Award
NWIBRT Member Companies can nominate a contractor that performs work on its site for this award, by submitting a letter describing the innovation. As a contractor (subscriber) you also can submit a letter explaining your innovative contribution that would qualify you for this award. Your company must have played a proactive role in developing a new safety initiative at that site. Also, NWIBRT will recognize a company who creatively manages workplace safety by developing and implementing effective safety programs, processes and procedures. The company would devise innovative and creative solutions that effectively solve industry safety challenges and problems. You must include a contact name and number for the Member Company that benefited from the innovation. Companies being considered do not have to meet any of the criteria for the other listed awards.

Progress Award
Companies applying for the progress awards must show an improving DAFW, TRIR and DART Rate for the past three years. While the company does not have to meet any of the criteria for the other award categories to submit an application for the Progress Award, they must show improvement and an overall commitment to safety.

- Free of any work-related fatality or Willful/Egregious OSHA citations in 2019
- Subscriber’s dues must be paid for 2019 & 2020
Roger Walters
Memorial Award
This award was created in honor of Roger Walters, an individual that exemplified the standards of safety in the construction industry throughout his career. He was dedicated to the importance of upholding safety standards and procedures and leading by example. This award will be presented to the safety representative that has demonstrated extraordinary contributions to the safety of the workers in Northwest Indiana. If your company nominated someone for the Roger Walters Award and they were not the recipient that year, you can resubmit a new Roger Walters application for that same person.

Outstanding Craft Person
Safety Leader Award
Companies can submit one or more craft person(s) from their organization that exemplifies dedication to safety to receive an honor for their accomplishment. There is no limit to the number of outstanding crafts person’s you submit for your company.

Lifesaver
Award
Recognition of an individual who has demonstrated heroism and skill in saving or attempting to save a life without regard to his/her own personal safety or harm to themselves.
